Valentine Cunningham est diplômé d’Oxford (Corpus Christi College), où il enseigne la littérature anglaise, et professeur de langue et littérature anglaises à l’Université d’Oxford. Pendant dix ans il a été Permanent Visiting Professor à l'Université de Constance en Allemagne. Il travaille comme critique pour de nombreuses revues et journaux britanniques et américains, et s’exprime régulièrement sur les ondes de la BBC. Il fut membre du jury du Booker Prize en 1992 et 1998 et a été ‘Eurasia’ Regional Chair of the judges pour le Commonwealth Writers Prize en 2000 et 2001. Son dernier livre, Reading After Theory, est paru en 2002.
