Caryl Phillips
Caryl Phillips est né à St Kitts, aux Antilles. Il grandit à Leeds. Après une licence en littérature anglaise à l'Université d'Oxford, il écrit son premier roman, The Final Passage (1985) qui a reçu le prix Malcolm X.Il écrit ensuite: A State of Independence (1986), Higher Ground (1989), Cambridge (1991) Crossing the River (1993), The Nature of Blood (1997) et A Distant Shore (2003). Il a reçu de nombreux prix, dont le Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year (1991) et le James Tait Black Memorial Prize (1993). Crossing the River a été sélectionné pour le prestigieux Booker Prize en 1993. Caryl Phillips a également bénéficié de nombreuses bourses, dont la British Council Fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residence, Guggenheim Fellowship, Lannan Literary Award et une bourse de la New York Public Library.
Il est membre de la Royal Society of Literature. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs pièces de théâtre, scripts, revues et articles et trois essais : The European Tribe (1987) pour lequel il a reçu le prix Martin Luther King Memorial, The Atlantic Sound (2000) et A New World Order : Selected Essays (2001). Il est l'auteur d'une anthologie de littérature anglaise, Extravagant Strangers (1997) écrite par des écrivains britanniques nés hors de Grande-Bretagne, et d’une anthologie d'écrits sur le tennis, The Right Set (1999). Il écrit régulièrement des articles pour The New Republic et The Guardian et pour d’autres publications partout dans le monde. Ses oeuvres ont été traduites en français, suédois, néerlandais, allemand, portugais, polonais, grec, finlandais, japonais et en turc. Il a enseigné dans des universités en Inde, à Singapour, en Suède, à la Barbade et au Ghana. Il vit à New York où il enseigne l'anglais. Il est aussi Henry R Luce Professor of Migration and Social Order à Barnard College, Columbia University.
